Travis Marcum: Focus on EKU College of Education Graduates
EKU alumnus Travis Marcum is a teacher and school administrator in his eleventh year as an educator. He earned his undergraduate degree from EKU in middle grades education (2010) and is currently enrolled in EKU’s Educational Leadership and Policy Studies doctoral program. He has already completed his Rank I and principal certification in this program and will become DR. Marcum when he graduates in 2022.
Marcum started his career in education as a middle school social studies teacher at Conkwright Middle School and taught language arts and social studies at Model Laboratory School on EKU’s campus. He started a "School of Rock" band with students as an elective class at Model. He has also served as a curriculum specialist at Berea Independent and is currently the head principal at Conkwright Elementary School in Clark County. Marcum has also taught EDF 204-Emerging Instructional Technologies for EKU’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
“As a principal, I am privileged to collaborate with many stakeholders to provide a safe and caring learning environment where all can achieve success. I get to implement change and see progress on multiple levels within my school and the community,” he said. “Becoming principal has been a dream come true even in the middle of a worldwide pandemic.”
Marcum was inspired to become an educator because he wanted to lead, teach, and inspire youth to become the best version of themselves. “I try to model a love of learning and a passion for service for my students,” he noted. For example, he has sponsored Student Y organizations. The Student Y is a student-run school or community-based organization that promotes critical thinking, leadership, and social responsibility through experiential learning, service, and community activism. He also started a Guys With Ties club for elementary boys to develop into leaders within their school and community.
Marcum also has his own blog which includes many posts related to education at https://mykillerblog.wordpress.com/
